JMI Publishes Detained Students' Personal Details On Campus Gates
New Delhi: A day after the students of Jamia Millia Islamia launched a sit-in protest against administrative repression, which was followed by their detention by the Delhi police, the authorities targeted the students by issuing public notices and pasting them on the campus gates. The notice revealed personal details and academic records of the students who had taken part in the protest.
As per the Maktoob Media report, the notice was titled, “List of active students who organised a protest without any permission on 10/02/2025 at 5:00 PM at the central canteen hall”. It included the details of at least 17 students, which included six women. The photographs, names, student ID numbers, mobile numbers, email addresses, home addresses, academic departments, and affiliated organisations were included in the notice.

The students were detained following the university administration accused of vandalizing varsity property- including the central canteen and security advisor’s office. “This is an unprecedented and unimaginable crackdown meant to terrorize students,” said a student whose name was listed in the notice.
“How dare @jmiu_official admin make the details of its students public!! The address and phone numbers have been pasted outside Jamia’s gates for everyone to see in gross violation of the privacy of students. Who will be responsible if these students get attacked?” Neha, a JNU PhD student wrote on X.
With the amount of bad press Jamia as a minority institution gets & the notoriety associated with the idea of protests, this a nothing but a clear call for harassment and/or attack against these students! Who is responsible if these students r harmed?
Shame @jmiu_official

“Who will be responsible if these students get attacked? Nothing! nothing justifies this act of the Jamia admin! There are young women in this list and students just out of their teens. Nothing gives the Jamia admin the right to destroy the futures of these students!”

“Jamia has turned into a space where any form of student engagement is labelled as misconduct,” a protesting student has said.
The students whose personal details were published were associated with student groups including AISA, DISSC, SFI, Fraternity Movement, NSUI, AIRSO, and MSW.
The detained students were held for about 12 hours without providing any information about their whereabouts to their family and friends. The female students who were detained by the Delhi police had reported that the male police officers had subjected them to mental torture by pulling their hair, beating them severely, and confiscating their mobile phones. Further, the students alleged that they were taken to several police stations across South East Delhi.

This new incident occurred just days after the university had sent an email suspending the students who had been protesting since Monday, February 10, 2025. In the statement released by the authority, the university alleged, “These students, in the last two days, vandalized university property, including the central canteen, and also broke the gate of the security advisor, forcing the JMI administration to take action. They have violated other university rules and were found carrying objectionable contraband items”.
