Due to continuing heavy rains in the state, five district collectors from Kerala have declared holiday for educational institutions on Wednesday. School and other educational institutes, including professional colleges, will be closed on July 31 in Pathanamthitta, Kasargod, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy downpours to continue in the following five days, raising fears of flooding. Alerts have been given in all districts about heavy rainfall by the weather forecasting agency. Waterlogging has been widely reported in several areas, while many houses are seen partly submerging in raising water level from the incessant rainfall in the state.
The landslide in Wayanad in the wee hours today has taken more than 100 lives, while many are still missing. Hundreds have been hospitalized while thousands have been displaced. Many houses, buildings, and other institutions have been washed away by the devastating landslides in the region.

Schools in several districts had been already declared holiday today due to the heavy downpours since July 29. A bridge in Palakkad has shattered, while many others closed due to the river overflow. As torrential rain continues to hit the state, authorities are making preparation to tackle with potential calamities.
