Prof. Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, New Delhi has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. The appointment came under the Statues of Jamia Millia Islamia Act, 1988. The President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of the JMI appointed Prof. Asif as the VC. Mohammad Shakeel has been serving as the officiating VC of the university.
The appointment of the Vice Chancellor is done for five years from the date of his appointment or until he attains the age of 70 years. The terms and conditions of the service of Prof. Mazhar Asif as the VC of the JMI shall be those as outlined in the Act, Statutes, and Ordinances of JMI.

Prof Asif, a JNU professor has been part of the committee that drafted the National Education Policy 2020, the national monitoring committee for education, and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team. He also served as the chairman of the National Institute of Open Schooling, regional centre, Guwahati.
The newly appointed VC completed MA and PhD degrees from JNU. The professor has over 20 years of experience in teaching at the postgraduate level. With over 20 years of experience in teaching at the postgraduate level, and authorship of nine books in Persian-English and Assamese languages.
