The Supreme Court agreed to examine a plea against reducing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)—Advanced attempts from three to two. A similar plea was listed before the bench on January 10 following which the court directed both to be tagged.
The fresh plea is related to the process for admission into the prestigious IITs but the joint admission board (JAB) entrusted to conduct the JEE-Advanced exam, changed the eligibility criteria for students in an ‘arbitrary’ manner.
The plea mentioned, “The JAB, vide its press release dated November 5, 2024, first fixed the permissible number of attempts for JEE-Advanced at three, only to change it abruptly vide another press release dated November 18, 2024, and thereby reducing the number of attempts to two”.

According to the plea, the abrupt changes in the eligibility criteria affected the petitioner as well as thousands of similarly situated persons, which denied them a valuable opportunity to enter the IITs. It added that the change in eligibility criteria violated the principle of natural justice and also in violation of principles of legitimate expectation and promissiory estoppel.
It said the change disentitled and disqualified many students from taking the JEE-Advanced 2025 exam.
Notably, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) has restored the eligibility criteria related to the number of attempts in JEE Advanced 2025. Earlier in a notification released on November 5, 2024, the admission board announced that candidates can appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) thrice, however later taking a U-turn board has said that the attempts criteria has been restored to the original. Now a candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
