Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has shared a post on his X handle, on MBBS seats in the country becoming invalidated due of the mismanagement of guidelines by the college authorities. His post was, of a Times of India report, which pointed at the violations in conducting counselling, which have led to, over 600 MBBS fresher students loosing their seat – whose medical admissions have been invalidated because of the violation of rules by their college management.
On this, Tharoor wrote, “this is absurd. In a nation with a desperate shortage of doctors by @WHO standards, &crying needs in public health, to allow 2000 precious medical seats to go unused, when there are so many bright students clamouring for an opportunity to study medicine, is a sin. Shame!”

The crackdown of the National Medical Mission (NMC) on such institutions have led to many MBBS students being displaced. The violation of guidelines included the conducting of counselling, which by rule should be conducted only by a central or state agency. The college students were given admission by the college without keeping by the rules, which have now become the axe on their career. Such mismanagement in many states have led to more than 2,000 MBBS seats going waste, the report said.
There are many seats, above 1500, which have been left vacant beyond the September 30 deadline, which would now need a Supreme Court extension to be refilled again. In some cases, States have been conducted counselling even beyond the cut-off dates. While these violations are being undertaken, it is the students who are affected. These discrepancies have come under the NMC glare.
