TISS Issues Ban Order For Student Organisation At Its Campus

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai Registrar issued a notice banning the ‘Progressive Student’s Forum (PSF)’. PSF calls itself a student-led political organization and initiative to build a democratic, secular space and culture of rational thoughts.

Institute has Imposed an “Immediate Ban” on the group from all institute premises and activities, the notice said that “any attempt by this group to organize or participate in unauthorized events will be met with immediate intervention and consequences.”

As per the TISS, the organization is an ‘unauthorized and illegal forum’ that has been engaged in activities that obstruct the institute’s functions, defame the institute, demean members of the community, and create division among students and faculty. The registrar’s notice also stated that the group is misleading and misguiding students which distracts them from their academic pursuit.

The PSF has reportedly, been at the center of controversial activities at the TISS campus. In January 2023, it participated in the screening of a controversial BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ inside the campus premises.

The student led organisation had also supported the 30 -year old PhD scholar Ramadas KS against his suspension over alleged ‘misconduct and anti-national activities’ at the institute. Apart from this, it has held various protests over several other issues and condemned the changes brought up by the TISS for the admission process when it declared its admission through CUET.

The notice also encourage students who encounters or approached by organisation in future to report the incident to campus security or the institute’s student affairs office. “All reports will be handled with the utmost confidentiality,” the notice stated.
