Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharama presented the Union Budget 2025-26 in the Parliament today, February 1, 2025. The finance minister announced key decisions and steps to reform the education sector. While announcing the expansion of IITs, Ms Sitharaman said that the total number of students in IITs has increased by 100 percent in the last 10 years.
“The total number of students in 23 IITs has increased 100% from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh in the past 10 years. Additional infrastructure will be provided in 5 IITs started after 2014 to facilitate the education of 6,500 more students. Hostel facility and other capacity at IIT Patna will also expend”, Nirmala Sitharaman said.
