The University Grant Commission (UGC) has issued a notice for the higher educational institutions regarding the publication of a map of India. The higher education regulatory body has asked educational institutions to publish the maps of India as published by the Survey of India.
Non-compliance to the directives will be considered a punishable offense under the Criminal Law Amendment (amending) act. 1990, the UGC said.

“Whosoever publishes a map of India, which is not in conformity with the maps of India as published by Survey of India shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to six months, or with fine, or with both,” said the higher educational regulatory authority.
The higher educational institutions have been requested to ensure the compliance with the amendment law.
The Survey of India is the National Mapping Agency of the country under the Department of Science & Technology. It is the oldest scientific department of the government of India.
In the year 2005, the Union Cabinet approved the National Map Policy 2005 that mandates Survey of India to produce, maintain and disseminate the topographic map database of the country which is the foundation of all spatial data.
The Survey of India has been creating maps and conducting surveys for more than 250 years. It has progressed from creating paper maps to creating digital maps and is currently working on creating corporate GIS systems.
