Khordha, Odisha – August 11, 2024: The Odisha Conference of Youth (OCOY 2.0) 2024, organized by the UNICEF-led Youth4Water Plus campaign, commenced at KT Global School, Khordha, drawing over 150 youth leaders, climate experts, and policymakers. The three-day event aimed to address the critical challenges of climate change and promote sustainable development in Odisha, aligning with the global COP29 agenda. The conference was accredited by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and UN India, emphasising the role of young people in driving climate action.
The event concluded with a valedictory session on August 11, featuring speeches from notable guests, including Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Pravati Parida. During her address, Smt. Parida underscored the significant role that the youth play in shaping Odisha’s future amidst climate challenges. She emphasized that the youth of Odisha are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but are already making impactful changes today. She highlighted their passion, innovation, and dedication to sustainability as critical factors that will determine the state’s developmental trajectory in the coming years.
Reflecting on Odisha’s leadership in environmental stewardship, Ms Parida pointed out that the state’s progress in this area is driven by the energy and vision of its young people. She noted that the ideas and solutions generated at OCOY 2.0 would guide Odisha’s policies and actions towards a more resilient and greener future. She concluded by urging the participants to continue their climate leadership journey beyond the conference, encouraging them to carry forward the lessons and experiences from OCOY 2024 into their communities. She motivated them to be the torchbearers of sustainable development, letting their actions speak louder than words in the collective fight against climate change.
Throughout the session, youth and children presented their recommendations on key themes such as heatwaves, pond conservation, coastal economy, and green skilling—topics they had thoroughly explored over the course of the three days. These recommendations were set to be presented to the Deputy Chief Minister, showcasing the collective wisdom and dedication of the participants.
Santoshi Sahoo, OAS Registrar at Odisha Health University, who delivered the keynote speech, expressed optimism and pride in the youth’s passion and commitment. She remarked that the young leaders present at the conference are agents of change, and the seeds of sustainability they plant today will grow into a healthier future for all. Actress Bhoomika Dash also praised the energy and dedication of the young leaders, stating that each participant holds the power to drive meaningful change. She encouraged them to let their passion serve as a catalyst for a sustainable and prosperous future for Odisha and the world.
The conference recognized outstanding contributions from youth participants with the OCOY 2024 Youth4Water Plus x VIEWS awards. Categories included “Captivating Catalyst Award” for the most engaging delegate, “Green Tales Laureate” for the most inspiring climate story, and “Environmental Trailblazer” for the best climate warrior on the field. Blorin Mohanty, General Secretary of Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), noted that these awards celebrated the courage, creativity, and commitment of Odisha’s youth in addressing climate issues.
As OCOY 2024 drew to a close, it was evident that the conference was more than just a platform for discussion; it served as a launchpad for action, inspiring a new generation of climate leaders in Odisha and beyond. The event’s inauguration featured speeches from Sourav Bhattacharjee, Officer-in-Charge Chief of UNICEF Odisha, and other dignitaries who highlighted the importance of integrating youth perspectives into climate policy.
The conference also included interactive storytelling sessions where youth from different regions of Odisha shared their climate adaptation stories. Participants engaged in field visits to Barunei Hills, led by Vineet Vohra of Give Me Trees Trust, to observe the impact of reforestation and conservation efforts. Reflecting on these visits, Prasiddhi Singh, Founder of Prasiddhi Forest Foundation, emphasised the importance of field experiences in understanding ground realities and igniting the change they aspire to see.
