Universities In Kerala To Launch 4-Year Degree Courses From This Session

The Kerala state higher education minister R Bindu informed that the state universities will offer four-year degree courses in the upcoming academic year. The new 4-year degree programmes will replace the existing 3-year courses.

As per the information, the universities will start the application process before May 20th, 2024. The trial rank list and final rank list will be issued before June 15, and the admission process will start on June 20.

Kerala state universities 4-year programme: Key highlights

  • The state education minister said that the new 4-year courses will give greater flexibility to students in selecting different combinations of subjects which can be changed during the course period. This will ensure the right combination of academic and career prospects for students.
  • The academic counsellors on the campus will help students to shape up courses according to their choice.
  • This will end the 3-year degree programmes, however, students who wants to get a degree after 3 years can do so and take their degrees. Those students who want to obtain an honours certificate by successfully completing 4-years course can do so by continuing their programme for four years.
  • One additional provision is made for the exceptionally bright students who can complete their three year course in just two and a half years.
  • The four-year course also offer students for inter-university transfers.
  • The students will be free to get additional credits by completing online courses and use them for completing their degree or honours courses.
  • Unified academic calendars will be introduced in the universities and help desks will be set up at university and college levels.

Moreover, the four year degree programme will help students to take direct admission into the PhD programmes. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh recently announced that the 4-year degree students will be allowed to pursue PhD just after their graduation after clearing their UGC-NET examination.
