In a recent directive, Harsh Dev Swami, District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) Saharanpur district, has announced that all schools and colleges in the district will remain closed from July 26 to August 2, amid the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. The decision has been taken to facilitate the Kanwar Yatra 2024 and to maintain law and order amid the growing crowd going to collect water from River Ganga. The closure order applied to all primary, upper primary, secondary, state-run, CBSE, ICSE board-recognized schools, madrasas, degree colleges, DIET, and technical institutes.
Similar orders also came in other districts in UP including Muzaffarnagar district where schools will also remain closed from July 26 to August 2, 2024. In Meerut and Hapur, the decision became effective on July 26 to ensure the safety of Kanwar Yatris while traveling.

In cities such as Varanasi, Indore, and Ujjain, the school schedules have been modified. During the yatra, schools in these areas will observe closure from Monday and are likely to conduct classes on Sundays.
In addition to UP, schools will also remain closed in Uttarakhand due to the Kanwar fair. Haridwar schools from class 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres will remain closed from July 27 to August 2.
The Kanwar Yatra which runs from July 22 to August 6, 2024, has increased police monitoring on major routes to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The traffic advisory has also been issued via Delhi Police. However, no closure has been announced in the capital city.
Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage observed by the Shiva devotees known as Kanwars to places of Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand. Ajgaibinath, Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of River Ganga. Millions of pilgrims travel miles away and carry it on their shoulders.
