Uttarakhand Abolishes Madrasa Board; Clears Minority Education Bill, 2025

The Uttarakhand Governor, Lt. Gen. Gurmeet Singh (Retd.), has cleared the way for the Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill, 2025, abolishing the Madrasa Board and bringing all minority-run schools under a uniform law.

Under the new regulations, an authority will be set up to grant official recognition to minority educational institutions to ensure that the standards adopted by the Uttarakhand Board of School Education are met.

The authority will also be empowered to oversee the fair and transparent student evaluations.

UK CM Pusphkar Singh Dhami has said that the Madrasa Board will become a history in Uttarakhand as the governor has given consent to the Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill, 2025.

The law would help to make the state education system more transparent, quality-oriented, and accountable, he added.

With the passage of the bill, the Madrasa Education Board Act, 2016, has been repealed along with the Non-Government Arabic and Persian Madrasa Recognition Rules, 2019, with effect from July 1, 2026.

The bill will also extend to other minority institutions, including Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian, and Parsi schools.

The CM Dhami had earlier stated the irregularities in the Madrasas related to the central scholarship distribution, mid-day meal scheme, and a lack of transparency in management. The new law will allow the government to oversee the functioning of minority educational institutions and to issue necessary directives to promote educational excellence.
