The Uttarakhand Madrasa Board is planning to introduce Sanskrit in its curriculum on an optional basis in over 400 madrasas across the state.
The Uttarakhand Madrasa Board’s chairman Mufti Shamoon Qasmi told PTI that they have been working on the plan for some time. A proposal is being prepared and will be implemented if the state government gives its nod to it. He also added that this is also in keeping with CM Pushkar Singh Dhami’s wish to link madrasa-going children to mainstream education.
Mufti Qasmi also said that the NCERT syllabus has also been incorporated into the madrasa’s education and students performed well in the board exams with over 96 percent of students cleared the exams. “There is no dearth of talent among students attending madrasas. Given an opportunity, they might excel in all subjects including Sanskrit”, he added.

Also, Uttarakhand Waqf Board Chairman Shadab Shams supported the introduction of Sanskrit education and expects that the state government will have no objection to implementing this proposal.
Apart from this initiative, madrasas in Uttarakhand are pushing to modernize their education system by incorporating modern syllabus. Earlier, the waqf board madrasa took the initiative to teach Lord Rama’s story to the students alongside that of Prophet Mohammad.
Other Madrasas also incorporate syllabus from mainstream education. Sanskrit among other subjects is also being taught at Darul Uloom Husainia Madrasa in Gorakhpur. The principal of the madrasa said, “It’s a modern madrasa under UP Education board & subjects like English, Hindi, Science, Maths & Sanskrit are taught here. They are also taught Arabic”.
