
WBBSE Asks SC To Modify Orders Affecting 25,000 SSC Teachers
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has filed a request to the Supreme Court to change a recent order cancelling more than 25,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments, as per the reports.
In its submission, the Board’s legal team urged to allow to remain in jobs who have not found guilty of any wrongdoing until the academic year is conclude or new appointments are made.
The request follow Supreme Court queshing more than 25,000 appointment carried out by the School Service Commission (SSC) in 2016. Supreme Court has invalidated the appointment of 25,753 teachers and other staff and termed the entire selection process “vitiated and tainted”. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigationg the matter.
WBBSE said that removal of such a large number of staff would disrupt the education across the state, impacting 9,487 secondary schools serving more than 7.86 million students.

Board stated that 88% of the students in West Bengal are enrolled in government or government supported schools. The removal of teachers will impact nearly 11.35% of the total teaching staff. It will put a considerable pressure on schools which depend on just one teacher per subject for Years 5 to 10.
SSC Chairman Siddhartha Majumdar reportedly siad that the Commission would soon approach Supreme Court seeking clarification on certain aspects of the judgement and to act in line with the court’s direction.
Affected teachers have taken to the streets and protesting against the Supreme Court rulling and SSC’s inability to remain unsuccessful in distinguishing genuine candidates and tainted selection.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has assured the impacted teachers that those deserving candidates will not be impacted and reinstated to their posts.
