Leaving behind the eight-term MP Santosh Gangwar, the BJP has fielded Chhatrapal Singh Gangwar from the Kurmi community of Bareilly. The Bareilly will go to polls on May 7, 2024, in the third phase. Bareilly seats represent 3.5 lakh Kurmi voters and Gangwar voters form a significant portion of Bareilly city, Bareilly Cantt., Nawabganj, Meerganj, and Bhojipura. Chhatrapal Gangwar”s nomination came after going through all political calculations by the BJP. Parveen Singh Aron is the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) candidate from the constituency.
Chhtrapal Singh Gangwar was the former minister of state for revenue in Uttar Pradesh. He was the MLA from Baheri constituency. Gangwar obtained a master’s degree from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, Bareilly.
Internal strife in the BJP has increased since the ticket was given to RSS-affiliated Chhatrapal Gangwar. The situation is that the party MLAs, MPs, and ministers are not supporting him in the election campaign. Chhatrapal Gangwar expressed his pain during a meeting regarding this and said since no one is making me contest the elections, I will surrender my ticket.
In the last general elections, Santosh Kumar Gangwar of BJP won the Lok Sabha constituency seat with 565270 votes (52.91%) by defeating Saran Gangwar of SP who secured 37.25% votes. The total voter turnout in the last constituency was 59.46%.
Bareilly Lok Sabha constituency comprises 5 assembly regions with a BJP stronghold as 4 out of 5 seats were won by the BJP candidates and 1 by the SP candidate in the last assembly elections. Since 1989, BJP candidate Santosh Gangwar has been elected from the Bareilly Lok Sabha constituency except once in 2009.
Bareilly parliament seat is comprised of Bareilly district. The literacy rate in the constituency is significantly low with just 49.27% population is literate here. The SC and Muslims constitute a notable high proportion of the total population with 28.16% and 16.9%.
