The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced its candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, with both new and veteran leaders. The party has picked Ashish Dubey, a new face in the electoral politics for the Jabalpur constituency.

Mr Dubey, who has a bachelor”s degree in Commerce, entered into active politics in 1990. He has held several positions in the party’s state committees. His late father Ambikeshwar Dubey was also an active member of the BJP with several important responsibilities being shouldered.

However, Mr Ashish Dubey seems to be fielded in a comfortable seat as the Jabalpur has been with the BJP since 1996. It was in 1991 that the Congress’s won the seat last time, with Shrawan Kumar Patel. The saffron party’s sitting MP Rakesh Singh has been representing the constituency for the past four terms. Notably, this time the party has picked a new face for the seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the sitting MP won the seat with a massive 65 per cent vote share, while the Congress candidate was reduced to 29 per cent from 35 per cent the Congress got in 2014.

The nomination of the Ashish Dubey was reportedly considering his and his father’s organisational activities and contributions in strengthening the party. Expressing his gratitude for the party leadership, Mr Dubey said that only the BJP can provide a seat for grassroot workers like him. The supporters of Mr Dubey celebrated his nomination to the parliament. The party however hope it can retain its stronghold with a new face like Ashish Dubey.
