The party has picked youth leader Rahul Mamkootathil to the Palakkad assembly constituency, which was vacated following its former MLA Shafi Parambil’s Lok Sabha debut. A fiery youth leader, Mamkootathill is presently the youth Congress state president. Congress believes the young leader to be an ideal replacement to its former Palakkad icon, Shafi Parambil, a popular leader known for retaining the seats for three consecutive terms since 2011 without kneeing down before any mounting political challenges.
Notably, the constituency is one of the BJP’s eyes, and the party has come second, replacing the left candidates during the past two assembly elections. The former Congress MLA won the seat during the last assembly polls by a margin of around 3,000 votes against BJP heavyweight E Sreedharan.
