Congress candidate and Rajasthan Assembly Speaker CP Joshi was defeated by the BJP”s Vishvaraj Singh Mewar in the Nathdwara constituency. Vishvaraj Singh, a member of the erstwhile Mewar royal family, secured 94,950 votes. However, CP Joshi managed to get only 87,446 votes. Vishvaraj Singh Mewar achieved a winning margin of 7,504 votes.
“I accept the decision of the people of Nathdwara. I thank the workers and colleagues who supported me during the entire election,” wrote CP Joshi on his official Facebook handle in Hindi on December 3. CP Joshi also added that he will continue to advocate for the interests of the people of Nathdwara. In the 2018 Assembly election, the seasoned Congress leader won the Nathdwara seat in Rajsamand district with a margin of 16,940 votes.
CP Joshi is the troubleshooter of the Congress party in Rajasthan, as he played a vital role in 2020 when he saved the Ashok Gehlot government. Amid a severe crisis between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, Speaker CP Joshi issued notices to 19 Congress rebel lawmakers in the Rajasthan assembly. While CP Joshi aimed for a sixth victory by highlighting the outgoing government’s welfare schemes, BJP candidate Vishvaraj Singh Mewar, who joined the BJP in October, depended on the BJP’s popularity in the region. The BJP also showcased the works of its government at the Centre.
