Jothimani Sennimalai, popularly known as S. Jothimani has been an MP from Karur Lok Sabha constituency since 2019. In her second Lok Sabha Lok Sabha fight, she defeated the then MP All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) veteran M. Thambidurai with a huge margin of 4,20,546 votes. Her performance had surprised many and is believed to be the reason for Congress” renomination of Jothimani from her sitting seat.
Born in 1975 at Periya in Thirumangalam, Jothimani has been engaged in social works and organisational activities since her college days. Jothimani began her political career at the young age of 22 and has held several positions. She has represented Indian National Congress in several international events including the American Council for Young Political Leaders. She has also held several Panchayath, district and national-level positions. She has served as Indian Youth Congress”s national coordinator and Indian Youth Congress” general secretary.
She was first fielded from the Karur seat during the 2011 assembly elections in which she suffered the defeat. In the 2014 general elections, she tried her luck to the Lok Sabha for the first time and was lost to AIADMK”s Thambidurai. Notably, her 2019 performance garnered significant attention with her stunning electoral performance.
The 43-year-old politician has no criminal cases against her and has an asset of over 60 lakh as per the affidavit. Her performance as a parliamentarian is also appreciated as she has participated in 42 debates while registering 74 percent attendance. She has raised 201 questions and introduced two private bills across different sessions.
However, a fierce competition is anticipated between the Congress candidate Jothimani and AIADMK”s debutant N Thangavel in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With a renewed push, the BJP which has not nominated candidates for the past few decades has also fielded its candidate V.V Sentilnathan from Karur constituency.
