Daggubati Purandareshwari, daughter of former matinee idol and politician NTR, is the BJP candidate from Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency for the 18th parliamentary elections. Congress has fielded Gidugu Rudra Raju and incumbent YSRCP has nominated Guduri Srinivas from here to contest the election against the former Congress union minister.
D Purandareshwari is currently the BJP state president in Andhra Pradesh. In the 14th and 15th Lok Sabha, she represented the Bapatla and Visakhapatnam constituency on the Congress ticket. However, after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, she resigned from Congress marking a protest in 2014, and joined BJP. D Purandareshwari has been vocal on women”s issues during her tenure in the lower house.
In the last general elections in 2019, YSRCP candidate Margani Bharat won the elections with 582024 votes (38%). The TDP candidate Magani Roopa remained the runner-up with a total of 121634 votes (30%) from the constituency. The total voter turnout in the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency was 81.5%.
Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency is comprised of 7 assembly regions including Anaparthy, Rajanagaram, Rajahmundry City, Rajahmundry Rural, Kovvur, Nidadavole, and Gopalapuram. The Rajahmundry Lok Sabha Constituency has been represented by the Congress party multiple times and by TDP also. In 2019, the YSR Congress Party candidate won the seat for the first time.
Rajahmundry Lok Sabha Constituency is a general category parliament seat comprising part of the east Godavari district and part of the west Godavari district. The total literacy rate in the constituency is 65.33%. The SC, ST, and Muslim populations in the constituency are 19.29%, 3.56%, and 1.81% respectively.
