As the Haryana assembly election nears, the BJP released the second list of 21 candidates on Tuesday, marking a noticeable drop of the existing legislators from several constituencies. In the second list, the party has dropped seven MPs and two ministers, reportedly causing discontent within the state BJP unit.

The disappointment among several functionaries became evident with some resignations, including of the state unit executive member Shiv Kumar Mehta, as he was denied a ticket from the Narnaul constituency, which he has been eyeing for. The party fielded Om Prakash Yadav for the constituency instead.

Another fallout of the second list came from the resignation of Haryana BJP spokesperson, Satyavrat Shastri, who accused the party of straying from its values and getting influenced by people with opposing beliefs, reported The Indian Express.

Disillusioned over not getting a ticket from the party, Mehta said he has been working for the party for 45 years. “They kept ignoring me and telling me each time to prepare for the next time. The same happened this time,” said the BJP leader, adding that he has quit the party and will focus on social service.

The dropped includes state party president Mohan Lal Badoli, and the ministers who were replaced with new candidates include school education minister and Badkhal MLA Seema Trikha and health minister and Bawal MLA Banwari Lal, both replaced by Dhanesh Adlakha and Krishna Kumar, respectively.

The party’s first list of 67 candidates had included 17 SC candidates, 19 OBCs, five Rajputs, 11 Punjabis, 11 Brahmins, five Vaishyas, two Muslims, and one Sikh, in its efforts to counter the criticism for not representing various castes and communities. The new list, however, stirred controversy within the party eco system of the state.
