Kokrajhar constituency of Assam will go to polls in the third phase on May 7. The Indian National Congress has fielded Garjan Mashahary as its candidate from Kokrajhar constituency.
In 2021, Garjan Mashahary joined the Congress party. He was one among several top Bodo leaders to join the grand old party. Garjan Mashahary has been the chief convenor of the Bodoland movement when he joined Congress. Mashahary said while leaving the party that the People’s Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement (PJACBM) has been conducting a long-lasting movement for peace among the people in Bodoland but “peace and harmony have been greatly affected during the communal rule of the present BJP government”. He further added that the Congress has to return to power if an atmosphere of peace is to be re-established among the people of the state.
“Problems like unemployment have greatly distressed the youth and their future is also at stake and so attracted by its policies and ideals, we decided to join the Congress,” Mashahary said.
Kokrajhar is one among the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam. The seat is reserved for scheduled tribes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania won the election by securing 4,84,560 votes. However, he will not be able to contest 2024 Lok Sabha election as the Gauhati High Court. The court has dismissed a petition by Sarania challenging a January 12 order of the state-level caste scrutiny committee (SLSC) that cancelled the Scheduled Tribes (ST) certificate issued to him in 2011.
