According to the Election Commission of India, Champai Soren is currently leading against JMM’s Ganesh Mahali in the Seraikela seat in Jharkhand. This is a major development, as Champai has held this seat for four consecutive terms with the JMM.
His bid to retain the seat with the BJP has added significance, especially since exit polls are predicting a possible win for the BJP.
Champai Soren, also known as the “Kolhan Tiger,” has had a remarkable career in Jharkhand politics. He’s been a monumental force in the state, holding the Seraikela seat since 2005.
However, his recent switch from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has shaken things up in the tribal heartland.

Champai‘s switch to the BJP was a dramatic move, as he alleged humiliation and accused the JMM of deviating from its core principles, including tribal rights and opposition to Bangladeshi infiltration. The BJP has been trying to woo tribal voters away from the JMM and Champai’s defection is seen as a major gain for the party.
The Jharkhand elections were held in two phases on November 13 and 20, for all 81 assembly seats. Both the INDIA Alliance-led JMM and the BJP-led NDA are hopeful of victory with the outcome hanging in the balance.
