Kalpana Soren Secures Gandey Constituency; Hemant Soren Calls Her A 'Star Campaigner'
The Gandey Assembly constituency is seeing a fierce election this year as Kalpana Soren, the wife of Chief Minister Hemant Soren contested against grassroots leader Muniya Devi, who was running on a BJP ticket. Since 1977, the JMM has secured the Gandey constituency six times while BJP and Congress emerged victorious twice.
Ms Kalpana Murmu Soren has defeated the BJP candidate Muniya Devi with a vote margin of 17142. However, the BJP candidate gave a tough competition to the CM’s wife as Kalpana Soren was trailing initially against Muniya Devi.
The JMM-led alliance easily crossed the halfway mark of 41 in the assembly seats to form the government. JMM secured 34 seats, BJP 21, INC 16, RJD 4 and CPI (ML) (L) 2 seats in the Jharkhand Assembly Elections Result 2024.
The Jharkhand Assembly elections concluded with a high voter turnout of 68.01% while Gandey witnessed an impressive participation of 73.36% voting.

In January this year, the sitting MLA from Gandey, JMM’s Sarfaraz Ahmed, left the seat for Kalpana Soren’s poll debut. Kalpana Soren bagged her maiden victory in May 2024, defeating then-BJP candidate Dilip Kumar Verma by over 26,000 votes. The candidacy in Gandey is important as the outcome will impact the JMM’s influence in the region.
While Muniya Devi is new to the Assembly elections, in 2011 she was elected to a District Council member. While Kalpana entered politics after Hemant Soren was arrested in January 2024 by the ED in a land case. She has played a significant role in the JMM outstanding performance in the state.

After securing a victory in the state elections, the Jharkhand incumbent CM Hemanta Soren called her a ‘star campaigner’ and shared image of Ms Soren.
