Mr Patel is the incumbent Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti of India in the second Narendra Modi cabinet and is one among the three cabinet ministers fielded by the BJP for the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Elections. BJP had been in power in Madhya Pradesh since 2003 but lost to the Congress in 2018. But in a critical move the Congress government led by Kamal Nath lost power after senior Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia rebelled and joined the opposition party with over 20 MLAs.
The BJP expects an easy win looking back to the state’s previous history. The sitting Chief Minister is there in the office since 2005, except a two-year break in 2018 to 2020. He is the longest-serving CM of Madhya Pradesh (4 times) and also the national Vice-President of BJP – a steadfast labourer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
