Satara, Maharashtra: As suspense over who will be the next Maharashtra Chief Minister looming large, Shiv Sena chief and caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that decision will be taken during a meeting of the BJP legislative party today, December 2. Ending speculation concerning the swearing in of the new Maharashtra government, the state unit of the BJP on Saturday said that the oath-taking ceremony would be held on December 5.

“This government is the people’s government. I have clarified my role. The honourable Prime Minister and the honourable Home Minister will take the final decision on (Chief Minister). They (BJP MLAs) are meeting tomorrow. It will be decided. Dont’ worry,” the NDTV quotes, as Shinde is saying.

After meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, Shinde travelled to his native village in Satara on Friday. He spent the last two days there, and later on Sunday, he left for Thane. While speaking to reporters in his village, he made a powerful pitch for his return to the top post, stressing that he worked as a common man, so the common man feels he should be back in the position.

When a question posed to him that there is demand in some sections in the state that he should hold the post again, he replied: “I was the people’s Chief Minister. . . . Actually, I used to say that I was not just the Chief Minister but the Common Man. As a common man, I understood problems and pain suffered by the people and tried to address them. Since I worked as a common man, obviously people feel that I should become the Chief Minister,” the Indian Express reports.

Shiva Sena chief also suggested the BJP central leadership that the Assembly elections were fought under his leadership and the “kind of success” Mahayuti government garnered has never been attained by anyone in the past. “Both the Deputy Chief Ministers and other colleagues were with me. We secured a big victory,” he added. Also, he further added that his party will support the decision taken by PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister.

When reporters asked whether Shiv Sena will demand the Home Portfolio and whether his son Shrikant Shinde will be made the Deputy Chief Minister, he said discussions will be held to resolve various issues and will take decisions in the interest of Maharashtra.

Continuing further, he said: “There is no lack of coordination or cooperation among the three parties of the Mahayuti alliance. The government will be formed as the Mahayuti has secured a full-fledged victory.”

Meanwhile, the Opposition criticised the Mahayuti’s delay in announcing the chief minister. Shiv Sena leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray on X attacked the BJP-led alliance’s inability to choose a Chief Minister even after a week was an “insult” to Maharashtra.
