New Delhi: Recently, BJP leader and nominee for New Delhi seat Parvesh Verma was caught in a controversy for allegedly distributing money, shoes, and blankets to voters ahead of Delhi assembly elections. Police registered a non-cognizable report (NCR) against Verma in violation of the poll code and Section 123 of the Representation of People Act, 1951. This development came in the midst of corruption allegations raised against BJP leader by AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and his party, accusing him of trying swing voters in the BJP’s favour using unfair means. In the Assembly polls, Verma is pitted against Arvind Kejriwal and Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit.

Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma is the son of former senior BJP politician and Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma. He is a former MP represented West Delhi constituency. He entered into politics by contesting from the Mehrauli constituency in the 2013 Delhi Assembly election and won. The sitting MLA Yoganand Shastri retreated to third position. He defeated AAP candidate Narinder Singh Sejwal by a margin of 4564 votes. Verma has also served as the member of the Delhi BJP election committee for the then assembly polls.
Verma made his debut in the Lok Sabha with the successful contest from West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in the 2014 polls. Verma won the seat with defeating AAP candidate Jarnail Singh by a margin of 2,68,586 votes. In the 2019 election, he retained the seat by defeating Congress candidate Mahabal Mishra by a margin of 5,78,486 votes. In the polls, Verma not only broke his record but also set a new record as candidate garnering highest victory margin in Delhi.

In response to the allegations raised by AAP, Parvesh Verma claimed that these were made out of “fear of defeat” faced by AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal. “All these allegations are baseless and result of Kejriwal’s panic in view of his imminent defeat. He should calmly contest the elections and tell the people of New Delhi about the works done by him,” Verma said. Verma also claimed that Kejriwal will lose his deposit when the results and will fall in to the third place. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit will secure the second place.
