The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced major leadership changes in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana as the party looks to strengthen its organisation ahead of upcoming political challenges.

The BJP on Wednesday named Harsh Malhotra as the new Delhi BJP president, Kewal Singh Dhillon as the Punjab BJP chief, and Archana Gupta as the Haryana BJP president.

The appointments replace Virendra Sachdeva in Delhi, Sunil Jakhar in Punjab and Mohan Lal Badoli in Haryana.

The leadership reshuffle was officially announced on May 28 and is being seen as part of the BJP’s larger strategy to consolidate its position across northern India.

Dhillon, a former Congress leader and industrialist from Barnala, joined the BJP in 2022 after the Aam Aadmi Party’s massive victory in the Punjab Assembly elections.

Before joining the BJP, he served as a Congress MLA from Barnala between 2012 and 2017 and also held the post of senior vice-president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

Dhillon had contested the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections from Barnala on a Congress ticket but lost to AAP leader Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Sangrur but was defeated by Bhagwant Mann, who is now the Chief Minister of Punjab.

In Delhi, Harsh Malhotra takes charge at a crucial time as the BJP focuses on expanding its organisational strength in the national capital. Political observers believe the party is aiming to build a stronger grassroots structure ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, Archana Gupta has been appointed as the new Haryana BJP chief, replacing Mohan Lal Badoli.

While the party has not yet shared detailed information about Gupta’s political background, her appointment is being viewed as part of the BJP’s efforts to bring fresh leadership into key state units.

The BJP has made several organisational changes in different states over the past few months as it prepares for future electoral contests.
