Satabdi Roy, the actor turned politician will be contesting elections from Trinamool Congress ticket from Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency. She is one of the 42 candidates fielded by the Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal. The date of voting in the Birbhum is May 13, 2024, and the result will be announced on June 4.
Satabdi has been the sitting MP from Birbhum since 2009. She attained higher education from the University of Calcutta.
Satabdi Roy’s involvement in the Lower House has not been impressive during her 2019 tenure as she registered only 77 percent attendance, participated in 24 debates, and asked only 1 question.
Recently, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee dropped her name from the 9-member core committee along with 4 others keeping an eye on the upcoming LS elections. Earlier, there was speculation of her joining the BJP as Satabdi raised grievances against her party through a Facebook post where she acknowledged the problem faced in the ruling TMC but also added to not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Birbhum constituency centers on the western part of Birbhum district in WB. The seat was reserved for the Schedule Caste category from 1962 to 2004, but in 2009, it was declared a free seat. Currently, 6 out of 7 assembly seats in the district are occupied by TMC. From 1971 till 2009, the Communist Party of India has won elections here.
The literacy rate is 64.36 percent and the SC, ST, and Muslim voters’ percentages are 31.4%, 7%, and 29.3% respectively. The rural voters are 92.4% and urban voters are 7.6%. In the 2019 parliamentary elections, the voter turnout was 85.6%. More than half of the population here is engaged in agriculture. In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Birbhum as one of the 250 most backward districts which is receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
