The BRS candidate Kova Laxmi takes back the Asifabad constituency after her loss in the previous election. Kova Laxmi by securing 83,036 votes pushed back the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Ajmera Shyam. INC candidate who came second secured only 60,283 votes. The third position was held by the Independent candidate Kotnaka Vijay Kumar with 16,469 votes. Analysing the margin, the constituency witnessed fierce competition among the candidates.
Asifabad constituency is one of the two constituencies in the Komaram Bheem district and comes under the Adilabad Lok Sabha constituency. It is a reserved constituency for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) among the twelve constituencies in the Telangana Legislative Assembly. The constituency is one of the few in Telangana where INC has hands above the TRS, now known as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
In the 2014 assembly elections the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) representative Kova Laxmi dominated the constituency by securing 59,094 votes. While the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate and current MLA of the constituency Athram Sakku was only able to secure 40,039 votes from the 1,90,257 eligible voters.
While in the previous election, assembly election of 2018, the TRS and INC was represented by the same candidates as of 2014. However, Athram of INC secured the position, pushing back Kova of TRS with a simple difference of 171 votes. To be precise the INC candidate from the constituency won on a weak majority. While Athram garnered 65,788 votes, Kova was able to secure 65,617 votes from a total elector number of 1,86,390. Azmera Athma Rao of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came third with just 6,711 votes.
Overall, according to the latest reports, out of the total 119 seats, INC has won 49 seats and leading in 15 seats. While BRS in the second position has secured 28 seats in total and leading in 11 seats. BJP is currently at the third position in the total seat share. Along with Telangana, the Assembly elections were held in four other states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. The results of these states except Mizoram have also been announced today.
