Uran constituency in the coastal town of Mumbai is one of the tightly contested assembly seats in Maharashtra, as the state is all prepared to vote its 288 legislators to the assembly on November 20. The constituency is all set to witness the fight between the sitting MLA BJP’s Mahesh Baldi and the former MLA and Shiv Sena UBT’s Mahesh Bhoir. Bhoir represented the seat in 2014.
Adding one more layer of competition, the Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWPI)’s debutant candidate, Pritam Mhatre, is analysed to be a huge challenge to both Mahayuti and MVA candidates. The constituency thus assumes a special place in the upcoming assembly elections, in which the dominant political parties are threatened by the debutant PWPI nominee. While the sitting MLA is eyeing to secure Uran for another term, the former MLA assures to address the increasing youth concerns about employment in a bid to recapture the seat.

The challenger, Pritam, also comes with experience, as he has been working in the constituency for the past few years and served as former opposition leader of the Panvel Municipal Corporation. It is also said that though the sitting MLA has some development works, such as coastal road projects, connectivity, and several infrastructure in his credit, the youth are infuriated with unemployment despite having qualifications. The young Mhatre is trying to use this gap, appealing to the women and youth of the constituency.
Talking about the youth concerns, Mhatre said he has felt that for a long time, employment opportunities have been denied to the youth, adding that he plans to employ these young people, promising over 1000 jobs in the first 100 days if he wins the election from the Uran constituency. He also assured us he would develop a sports academy in Uran.

The sitting MLA has also raised the issue, assuring youth that he would give preference to the youth and job creation. He is confident in winning the youth’s votes to secure reelection.
Notably, the MVA candidate, however, banks on his experience, which the debutant PWPI candidate lacks. He also notes the anti-incumbency against the sitting BJP MLA. When analyzing the recent Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena UBT’s Sanjog Waghere Patil gained a significant lead of 13,250 votes over Shinde Sena’s Shrirang Barne in the Uran assembly segment, signaling an edge to the Shiv Sena UBT in people’s mandate.
However, with the formidable challenge posed by the PWPI candidate, it is hard to predict a poll outcome of the major two candidates.
