Anti-Israel: Does 'Superman' Movie Draw Similarity With Gaza War?

Fans and movie goers are claiming that the latest installment of the DC Comics franchise Superman has drawn parallels with Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Reviewers have claimed that the movie has taken an anti-war, anti-Israel stance, lauding the director James Gunn and calling the script ‘very anti-Israel.’

Pondering about the movie, American podcast host Krystal Ball compared the fictional country of Boravia to Israel, mirroring the film’s plot with the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Anybody who watched the movie could easily find similarity with Palestine issue, claimed reviewers on social media.

Discussions are in full swing on social media platforms, including X and Reddit, regarding the movie’s alleged allegory with current conflict scenario. Mia Khalifa, the Lebanese-American former adult film actress who is known for pro-Palestinian solidarity, also lauded the filmmakers, observing, “Superman that freed Palestine is my fav[favorite] movie of the year so far.”

Some users on Reddit, especially supporters of Israel, have criticised Gunn and DC Studios for its anti-Israel message. Many found the movie disrespectful and distressing that a superhero created by two Jewish artists is now being used to promote anti-Israeli messages to the world. However, there also also those who called the plot just a normal movie script, noting that people are unnecessarily relating it to the Israel-Palestine conflict, suggesting that the film’s alleged pro-Palestinian bias would be only in the eyes of the beholder.

Why People Feel Superman Draws Parallels With Gaza War?

The movie portrays defenseless people picking up sticks and pieces of paper as a means of resistance. Many claim the movie’s parallels with Gaza are not even subtle, as several scenes looked exactly like the actual scenes from war-torn Gaza.

The plot canters on a US-backed nation invading a non-boring country. The superman steps in to prevent the war and save the victims. The movie shows the US ruling dispensation in conflict with Superman for trying to halt the war that the government is funding. The audience compared the sequences to US support for Israel to unleash offensives against helpless Palestinians in Gaza.

Several other scenes showed unarmed civilians confronting powerful enemy military forces, reflecting Israel’s military atrocities in Gaza. “This literally Palestinians’ lives,” many who watched the movie opined.
