BAFTA 2024: Online Outrage Over Snubbing Barbie And Forgetting Matthew Perry In Memoriam Segment

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is receiving backlashes online. The criticism is for not only snubbing Barbie, which had five nominations, but also for forgetting Matthew Perry, the late FRIENDS star, in the Award show’s ‘In Memoriam’ Segment.

Snubbing Barbie in the Oscar nominees has been a topic of for several weeks. The movie, which has been a highest grosser of 2023, was snubbed in the best actress and best director category. The 2024 BAFTA missing out on paying tribute to the late Matthew Perry has caused outrage. The Chandler Bing of FRIENDS, the American sitcom had received a heartfelt tribute at the 2023 Emmy Awards’ ‘In Memoriam’.

Chandler Bing fans, outraged by the snubbing of Perry from the ‘In Memoriam’ took to their social media handles to voice their anger and criticise BAFTA. One X user wrote, “Shame on you @BAFTA for not acknowledging @MatthewPerry #BAFTA2024”. Another user wrote, “No mention of Matthew Perry in the #BAFTAs memorial?! Bad form @BAFTA”.

Taking the fans outrage into account, BAFTA spokesperson gave a statement to People magazine and said, “I can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards.” The official handle of the awards also wrote on X while sharing the link of the People article, “Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony”.

As Oppenheimer swept the BAFTA with seven awards Barbie team went home empty handed. Barbie, one of the biggest blockbusters of last year was nominated for Best Actress, Bets Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay along with other designer awards. The Greta Gerwig directorial film crew went home left empty handed on Sunday’s award ceremony. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon also lost all nine of its nominations.
