Bengali Director Arun Roy Dies At 56

Bengali filmmaker Arun Roy, known for his critically acclaimed films such as Bagha Jatin (2023) and Hiralal (2021), died on Thursday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 56.

Roy was receiving medical treatment for a severe lung infection at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The director was admitted to the hospital after his health condition worsened. Despite being in the ICU and supported by a BiPAP system, his condition deteriorated further, requiring invasive ventilation.

According to reports, his body will be taken to his Haridevpur residence at 1 pm, following which his body will be kept at Technicians’ Studio for fans and colleagues to pay their respects.

Arun Roy, whose real name was Arunava Raychaudhuri made his debut with Hiralal. This film gained widespread acclaim for its gripping storytelling and memorable performances. However, his crowning achievement came with Bagha Jatin, a film about revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee, with actor Dev playing the titular role.

During the filming of his next film Baga Jatin, Roy was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Even as his health declined, the determined director remained committed to his work, recently completing the filming of Aranyer Din Ratri while undergoing treatment.
