Technology is evolving rapidly, but at the same time, cyber fraud incidents are also surging. Recently, popular Bollywood actress Anjali Patil was reportedly duped of ₹ 5.79 lakh by a cyber fraudster who posed as a cop of the Mumbai Police Branch. According to a News18 report, the fraudster falsely asserted that drugs were discovered in a parcel registered in her name, bound for Taiwan.

As per the report, Anjali Patil received a call from an unknown number on December 28, claiming to be Deepak Sharma, an employee of FedEx Courier Company. The caller told the actress that the customs department had seized a parcel of her name that was going to Taiwan, and the caller also added that drugs were found in that parcel. The fraudster also claimed that the Aadhar card of the actress was found in the same box. The caller also urged Anjali Patil to contact the Mumbai cyber police to avoid the misuse of the card.

Later, the actress received a Skype call from an individual named Banerjee, who claimed to be an officer of the Mumbai cyber police. Banerjee informed the actress that her Aadhaar card had been linked to three bank accounts involved in a money laundering case. The caller also demanded a processing fee of ₹ 96,525 for the verification process. Later, the fraudulent officer alleged that bank officials were also involved in the money laundering scheme. The fraudster also asked Anjali Patil to transfer Rs 4,83,291 to close the case and avoid legal consequences. Thus, the actress transferred this additional amount to a Punjab National Bank account controlled by the fraudster.

Days after this, Anjali shared the incident with her landlord and realised it was a cyber fraud. The actress then approached the DN Nagar Police. The police have registered a case and started an investigation based on Anjali Patil”s complaint.
