Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday taking to X expressed his condolences over the demise of renowned filmmaker Kumar Sahani. He on his X post, wrote, “The loss of renowned filmmaker Kumar Shahani, who also maintained warm ties with Kerala, is deeply saddening”.

Kumar Sahani passed away at a city hospital after battling a prolonged old-age illness. Sahani who was 83, died on February 25. Kerala Chief Minister in his statement said that Sahani has carved out a unique creative space through his innovative style, and played a decisive role in the growth of the Indian parallel cinema.
Sahani was admitted at AMRI Dhakuria on February 18, and his condition was later worsened, reports PTI. As per the officials, he was diagnosed with lower respiratory tract infection, hypertension, and sepsis he was placed in the intensive care unit. His health continued to decline with decreased urine output which led to his death around 10:25 pm on Saturday.
Guided by legendary director Hrithik Ghatak, Sahani was born in 1940 and pursued film studies at the Pune Film Institute (FTII). The filmmakers also got the opportunity to intern under the famous French director Robert Bresson for the film ‘A Gentle Creature’ in 1969.
During his career, he was awarded several accolades including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film in the years 1972, 1990, and 1991. He was also awarded with the International Film Festival of Rotterdam in 1990 and the Prince Claus Award in 1998
