Music legend Pankaj Udhas died after suffering from a prolonged illness at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Monday. The news of his demise was confirmed by his daughter Nayab Udhas on Instagram.
According to an India Today report, the singer “was not keeping well for the last few days. He died this morning around 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital,” stated the ghazal maestro’s team.
His daughter, Nayab Udhas, took to Instagram to confirm the sad news. “With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged family,” read the post.

Born in 1951, the singer”s childhood marked the beginning of his musical journey. By bringing ghazals to mainstream music, he made them accessible to a wider audience. Known for timeless classics including “Chitthi Aayee Hai” “Aaj Phir Tum Pe Pyaar Aaya Hai”, “Aur Ahista” and “Jeeye Toh Jeeye Kaise”, Pankaj Udhas’ voice continues to tug the heartstrings of listeners across generations.
A silence has fallen over the music industry as the demise of Pankaj Udhas has shaken everyone. Udhas was also known for his philanthropic nature and grounded personality.
The veteran ghazal and playback singer was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in the year 2006 for his invaluable contribution to Indian music.
According to an NDTV report, his last rites are scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
