Pinarayi Vijayan Hands Over 348 Flats To Coastal Families Affected By Sea Erosion, Vizhinjam Port Project

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has fulfilled another key promise to the state’s fisherfolk, officially handing over 348 modern flats under the Punargeham housing scheme to families displaced by sea erosion and the Vizhinjam International Seaport project.

Announcing the development on his official X account on August 7, the Chief Minister wrote: “Another promise to our fisherfolk fulfilled. Under the Punargeham project, 332 flats at Muttathara and 16 more at Unnial, Tanur have been handed over. These safe, modern homes ensure a life of dignity for coastal families relocated due to sea erosion and the Vizhinjam International Seaport project.”


The handover ceremony was attended by several state ministers, local leaders, and dignitaries, reflecting the significance of the initiative. The event was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in the presence of General Education and Labour Minister V SivanKutty, highlighting the government’s emphasis on holistic community rehabilitation that goes beyond housing to include education and social development.

Senior officials from the Fisheries, Revenue, and Local Self-Government departments, along with district administration representatives, were also present to mark the occasion.

“These safe, modern homes ensure a life of dignity for coastal families relocated due to sea erosion and the Vizhinjam project,” Pinarayi Vijayan said.

The Punargeham scheme was launched by the Kerala government to provide secure, sustainable housing for communities that lost their homes due to coastal erosion or large-scale infrastructure projects.

Each newly built flat comes with modern amenities, designed to offer long-term stability, a safe living environment, and an improved quality of life for the affected fisherfolk.
