Pradeep Ranganathan’s latest comedy entertainer, Dragon, has been doing exceptionally well at the box office. The Ashwath Marimuthu’s film, widely praised for its layered storytelling and unique approach, has now crossed the milestone set by Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi. Here is how the comedy entertainer surpassed the action thriller of the legendary star.
The action entertainer by director Magizh Thirumeni, featuring Ajith Kumar and Trisha in the lead, failed to meet the expectations of the audience both in terms of content and box office collection. However, the recent release of Pradeep has claimed the title of the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025, with its impressive box office collection.

Dragon: A Profitable Film
Dragon, the comedy entertainer released on February 21, has been receiving good reception among the audience and creating its own record at the box office. The film has so far collected Rs. 142.5 crores within a month of its release, as per Sacnilk. The film is the top choice of the audience even after 24 days of its release.
The film also emerged to be the most profitable Tamil film of 2024, with its impressive box office numbers. Made with a budget of Rs 37 crores, Dragon has exceeded expectations and proved to be a significant commercial success. Notably, the film clocked around Rs 82 crores from Tamil Nadu and Rs 32.7 crores from its overseas collection.
Surpassed the record of a Rs 350 crore film.
While high-budget films struggle to make profitable collections, Dragon has proved that low-budget films with good content can make miracles at the box office. Another notable achievement of the film is that it surpassed the records made by Ajith’s Vidaamuyarchi.
Despite high expectations, Vidaamuyarchi underperformed at the box office and wrapped its global theatrical run with just Rs 138 crore. Since the film boasts a tremendous budget of Rs. 350 crores, the failure of the film received much criticism.
Even though Vidaamuyarchi received praise for the lead cast’s performance, visuals and action sequences, the weak storyline and slow-paced narration couldn’t save the film.
How did Dragon beat Vidaamuyarchi?
Unlike Vidaamuyarchi, Ashwath Marimuthu’s Dragon took an innovative approach to capture the audience by blending suspense with comedy. Moreover, the film also had no competition at the box office until Veera Dheera Sooran Part Two, scheduled to hit theatres on March 27.

Produced by AGS Entertainment, the film also boasts a stellar cast with prominent stars on board, including Pradeep, Mysskin, GVM, Sneha, Anupama Parameswaran, and Kayadu Lohar in prominent roles. It also features George Maryan, Indumathy Manikandan, K. S. Ravikumar, VJ Siddhu, and Harshath Khan in supporting roles. Notably, actress Sneha also made a cameo in the film.
