"Hurt Hindu Sentiments": Case Filed Against SS Rajamouli Over Alleged Remarks On Lord Hanuman

Director S.S. Rajamouli has landed in controversy after the Rashtriya Vanara Sena filed a complaint against him at the Saroornagar Police Station on Tuesday. The group alleged that the filmmaker made disrespectful remarks about Lord Hanuman during the title presentation of his upcoming movie Varanasi on Monday.

In the complaint, the organisation said Rajamouli’s statements had hurt Hindu sentiments and expressed concern over the “casual way” gods are being referred to in the film industry.

They urged the police to register a case and launch an investigation, demanding strict action to prevent such incidents in the future. The police, however, have not taken action yet.

The issue erupted after a troubled night for Team Varanasi at the GlobeTrotter event in Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Despite large-scale planning, technical glitches repeatedly disrupted the screening of the movie’s first look, leaving Rajamouli visibly emotional.

Apologising to thousands of fans who had gathered from various parts of the world, Rajamouli spoke in Telugu and referred to a comment made earlier by his father, writer Vijayendra Prasad, who said that Lord Hanuman’s blessings were guiding the team.

Rajamouli admitted, “I don’t have much faith in God. My father said Hanuman would show us the way. When things went wrong, I got upset. Is this how He helps me?” The director paused during the speech, struggling to regain composure.

He also mentioned his wife Rama’s deep devotion to Lord Hanuman, saying she speaks to the deity like a close friend. “Let’s see if my wife’s Hanuman helps us this time,” he added emotionally.

Later that night, before attempting to play the film preview again, Rajamouli said, “If my father’s Hanuman saved us once, let’s see if my wife’s Hanuman can do it again.”

The remarks quickly spread across social media, sparking intense debate. Many commenters argued that a filmmaker of his stature should be more careful while speaking about religious beliefs; at the same time, several users came to his defence, saying he never said anything against Lord Hanuman and was simply emotional in a stressful moment.
