Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ died at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Friday (April 4). He was 87 years old.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence over the death of actor on X. “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he said in the post.

Confirming the reports of the veteran actor’s demise, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit expressed his grief in a video message posted on ANI, “Sad to inform you all that legendary Dada Saheb Phalke Award winner, our inspiration, doyen of Indian film industry, Shri Manoj Kumarji is no more. He breathed his last at at Kokilaben Hospital, Andheri,after not being well for a very, very long time. It’s a great loss to the industry, Manojji will really miss you.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh wrote in the post that actor would always be remembered for the patriotic films he had done.

Popularly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ his unforgettable performances in films like ‘Upkaar’, ‘Purab and Paschim’ have enriched our culture and have endeared him to people across generations.
