Malayalam Actress Kanakalatha Dies Aged 63

Kanakalatha, famous Malayalam actress renowned for her roles in popular films and serials like “Priyam” and “Aadyathe Kanmani,” died at the age of 63 today. She breathed her last at her residence in Thiruvananthapuram. She was recently in news as her condition about Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease hit headlines. An actress, who had the ability to shift from one role to another with certain ease, Kanakalatha had donned several memorable characters in Malayalam industry and shared screen space with many of the majors stars in last three decades.

With a career spanning over three decades, Kanakalatha left an indelible mark on both Malayalam and Tamil cinema. Her journey, however, was marked by personal struggles, including health challenges. In 2021, she began experiencing insomnia, which later led to a diagnosis of dementia in August 2022, as confirmed by MRI scans indicating brain shrinkage.

Despite facing financial hardships, Kanakalatha remained resilient. From initially living on rent in Valiyavila to eventually owning a house in Malayinkeezhu, she navigated through the ups and downs of her career. The pandemic-induced lockdown further strained her finances, posing challenges in repaying loans.

Throughout her life, Kanakalatha found solace in the companionship of her sister Vijayamma, who stood by her side for 34 years. A divorcee without children, Kanakalatha poured her heart and soul into her craft, starring in over 360 films across Malayalam and Tamil cinema.

Her journey into acting began with amateur dramas, eventually leading to her debut in the unreleased film “Unarthupattu.” However, it was “Chillu” that marked her official entry into the world of cinema. Despite personal setbacks, including a failed marriage, Kanakalatha remained dedicated to her art.

Her final appearance on the silver screen was in the film “Pookkaalam,” leaving behind a legacy cherished by fans and colleagues alike. Many from the industry mourned Kanakalatha’s death.
