Mammootty’s Turbo: Will Vysakh, The Box Office King, Be Able To Repeat His Magic? (image-Instagram/directorvysakh)

With what appears to be the golden era of the Malayalam film industry here, fans across the world are looking forward to another potential blockbuster hit from none other than acting legend Mammootty. Returning in the much-loved avatar of the mass entertainer, Mammoooty is collaborating once again with director Vysakh and produced by the actor’s production house, Mammootty Kampany.

The previous collaborations between the actor and the director include commercial hits Pokkiri Raja (2010) and its sequel Madhura Raja (2019). The 2010 film was declared the highest grossing Malayalam film of the year, garnering Rs 16 crore at the box office worldwide with a budget of Rs 10 crore.

With his debut directorial now etched in the history of Malayalam cinema as an iconic film, the sequel, Madhura Raja, also became a box office hit, collecting Rs 125 crore worldwide in its final run.

Having started his career as a television anchor and then moving on to the position of associate director, Vysakh’s 2016 release Pulimurugan, starring another Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead, became the first Malayalam film to collect Rs 100 crore at the box office.

His other commercial successes include Seniors (2011), Malllu Singh (2012). With huge hits in the genre of action entertainers, Vysakh has clearly cracked the code and excelled at his craft.

Now, coming up with his third collaboration with Mammootty, Turbo is being described as a new-age mass entertainer.

With back-to-back hits by the superstar, such as the queer narrative Kaathal – The Core (2023), and the black-and-white horror Bramayugam (2024), the 72-year-old has been exploring less travelled roads and delivering both commercial and critical successes even at this point in his acting career.

On top of that, the success rate of Mammootty Kampany delivering great cinema such as Kaathal – The Core, Kannur Squad (2023), Rorschach (2022), and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2022) is high.

Naturally, expectations are high, both from the legendary actor and the box office king, Vysakh. Set for release on May 23, the action-comedy also features Johny Antony, Dileesh Pothan, Anjana Jayaprakash, Kabir Duhan Singh, Alexander Prasanth, Abin Bino, Bindu Panikkar, and others in key roles.
