Met Gala 2025’s Kerala Connection
The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrated Black fashion with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” honouring Black dandyism and its cultural history. The event featured a stunning blue carpet adorned with daffodil motifs, crafted by Neytt by Extraweave, a Kerala-based design house. This marks the third consecutive year that Neytt by Extraweave has collaborated with the Met Gala to produce the event’s signature carpet.
The 63,000-square-foot carpet, woven from sisal fibers, was a visual highlight of the evening. Its deep royal blue hue, bordered by golden daffodils and cascading floral barricades, transformed the space into a breathtaking canvas. The carpet was manufactured by Neytt, and the Met Gala team hand-painted the beautiful blue floral design on it.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan made his Met Gala debut, dressed in a custom black wool ensemble designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. His outfit featured a floor-length coat in Tasmanian superfine wool with monogrammed Japanese horn buttons, a jeweled brooch, talismanic chains, and an 18-karat gold cane.
The 2025 Met Gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” drew inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book “Slaves to Fashion,” exploring the influence of Black sartorial style and dandyism over the past three centuries. The event highlighted the impact of fashion on Black identity, with the dress code, “Tailored for You,” emphasizing menswear while encouraging creative expression.
Co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky, the gala featured ensembles celebrating Black creativity and identity, with strong nods to late fashion icon André Leon Talley. Notable appearances included Zendaya in a white Burberry suit and Sabrina Carpenter in Louis Vuitton.
The event underscored a commitment to diversity and inclusivity in high fashion, with Neytt by Extraweave’s contribution symbolizing the fusion of Indian artisanal skill and global responsibility. The Alapuzha-based brand’s involvement in the Met Gala for the third consecutive year highlights the state’s rich textile heritage and its growing influence on the international fashion stage.
