The National Film Awards for 2021 were announced yesterday. People took to social media to express their protest at the snubbing of critically acclaimed films like Jai Bhim, Karnan, and Sarpatta Paramarai. These films discussed caste, culture, and hegemony in society, and each had exceptional performances by the protagonists. Netizens were especially irate that these films were overlooked in favor of the controversial film “The Kashmir Files”.

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had also criticised the calls taken by the jury.

“The dignity should not not be compromised for cheap politics”, said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, criticising ‘The Kashmir Files’ being selected for the National Awards in the category of ‘National Integration’.

Advaidism, a popular X handle, said that “the joke is on the country” for overlooking Sarpatta Parambarai, Jai Bhim and Karnan, which are considered to be the three best Indian movies of 2021, in the National Awards and giving the National Integration Award to a film that is considered to be propaganda.

Here are more reactions to the national awards:
