"Patriarchy Is The Cause Of Climate Change": Dia Mirza’s Remark Sparks Online Debate

Actor and environmental activist Dia Mirza has sparked a heated debate on social media after claiming that patriarchy is one of the key causes of climate change.

She made the remarks during a podcast conversation with actress Soha Ali Khan and environmental journalist Arati Kumar-Rao, where the discussion focused on ecofeminism and the connection between gender inequality and environmental degradation.

A clip from the conversation has since gone viral, drawing both criticism and support from social media users.

When asked by Soha Ali Khan why she believes patriarchy is responsible for climate change, Dia said, “Patriarchy is the cause of climate change. It is men who have driven climate change.”

Explaining her viewpoint, she added, “Who is driving consumption? Who goes to war? Who creates destruction? It is men. Men have driven climate change. Men have driven the destruction of nature. It is the masculine way of life that has created the crisis that we are dealing with today.”

Dia further argued that societies built around domination, control and exploitation have played a major role in environmental destruction and the climate crisis.

Her comments quickly triggered strong reactions online.

Several social media users criticised the actress, questioning her argument and accusing her of oversimplifying a complex global issue. Some users mocked the statement, while others described it as an attempt to sound intellectual without factual backing.

Supporters said her remarks were being taken out of context and that she was referring to historical power structures rather than individual men.
