Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light left the international audience in awe at the film’s world premiere at Cannes last night. For the first time in three decades, the country has a feature film in the Palm d’Or competition section. On top of that, the film received an eight-minute standing ovation, the longest of this edition of the film festival.
Malayalam actor Kani Kusruti can be seen waving a watermelon shaped handbag, expressing solidarity with Palestine, while looking pretty in white along her co-stars.
Celebrating the film and its grand success, the cast inlcuding Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon walked the carpet with the sharpest outfits.
Kapadia has become the first female Indian filmmaker to have her film screened at the respected festival while being the first Indian production to feature in the competition in over thirty years.
The last Indian entry in the prestigious Palme d’Or was the Malayalam drama Swaham (1994) by Shaji N. Karun.
