Cannes Film Festival 2025: Organisers Ban "Nudity" And "Voluminous Outfits" On The Red Carpet

The prestigious 78th Cannes Film Festival is all set to kick off today, May 13. While the entire world is getting excited for the festival night, the recent announcement from the organisers regarding the red carpet has grabbed the attention. Cannes has imposed dress codes wherein “nudity” and “voluminous dresses” are not allowed on the red carpet.

The Cannes red carpet is perhaps the most rigidly controlled red carpet in the world. Compared to the previous editions of the film festival, the 78th edition of Cannes is expected to be different because of these fresh add-on to the existing regulations. The festival organisers have said “no” to nude and voluminous attires in order to maintain “the institutional framework” of the festival and French law.

Reports suggest this decision was made considering the 2022 Cannes festival, where a demonstrator appeared topless on the red carpet. Meanwhile, Bianca Censori’s transparent dress , which caused an uproar at the Grammys 2025, also believed to have paved the way for this new regulation at Cannes.

On the eve of the festival, Cannes updated the dress code for screening on its official FAQ website for the event. The statement of Cannes reads, “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.”

Moreover, the festival organisers have also banned voluminous dresses, which might affect the flow of the event. This particular statement reads, “Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater, are not permitted.”

The organisers have also requested their guests to follow the rules with a warning that reads, “The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit Red Carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”

Guests attending screenings from around 7 pm to 10 pm at the Grand Théâtre Lumière are “required” to wear eveningwear in the form of long dresses and tuxedos. The website also includes alternative styles that men and women can choose to wear within the vague category. That includes a little black dress, a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants, or a black or navy blue suit with a bow tie or dark-colored tie.

Additionally, the organisers have also narrowed down the footwear options to elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel, but sneakers are not allowed.

The festival will continue till May 24. Indian celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shalini Passi, Sharmila Tagore, Karan Johar, and Janhvi Kapoor are a part of the festival this year.
