Rape, Death Threats To Actor Divya Spandana: 2 Arrested

Bengaluru Police have arrested two individuals for issuing rape and death threats to actor and former parliamentarian Divya Spandana—popularly known by her screen name Ramya- after she expressed support for a Supreme Court verdict related to the Renukaswamy murder case, where Kannada actor Darshan stands as the prime accused.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) detained the two accused, identified as Obanna and Gangadhar, after a complaint was lodged by Spandana with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner on July 28.

The complaint listed 43 social media accounts that had sent her vulgar, misogynistic, and violent messages in response to her Instagram and X posts made on July 26.

Divya  Spandana had welcomed the Supreme Court’s strong observations on the brutal killing of 33-year-old Renukaswamy and called for justice for the victim’s family. Her posts, however, triggered a wave of coordinated abuse, including rape threats and death threats from several users claiming allegiance to Darshan.

The Cyber Crime Police, working closely with CCB, registered an FIR under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act. Using digital forensics, they tracked down the origin of some of the threatening messages. During interrogation, both Obanna and Gangadhar reportedly admitted to having sent the obscene and threatening messages.

Police sources confirm that 11 additional individuals have been identified for similar online conduct, and legal proceedings are underway. In total, more than 48 social media handles have been flagged and are under active surveillance.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh noted that investigations are ongoing to determine if the arrested individuals and others involved are fans of Darshan or were acting under organised online influence.

Reacting to the arrests, Divya Spandana expressed her gratitude towards Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara and Police Commissioner Singh for taking swift and decisive action.

“A strong message has been sent: misogynistic aggression will not go unchecked. The law is firmly in place to protect women’s dignity and ensure safety in our city,” she said in a statement.

She also acknowledged the outpouring of support from citizens who stood by her during the abuse, posting a message on Instagram thanking her supporters and the officers involved.
