“Still Alive Only Because They Held Me Close:” Ghazal Singer Beegum’s Post Sparks Conversation On Toxic Marriages
Renowned ghazal singer Imthiyas Beegum, popularly known as Beegum, has set social media abuzz with a deeply emotional and cryptic Instagram post that appears to allude to her personal struggles after parting ways with her former husband and musical collaborator Raaza Razaq.
In her Instagram post, Beegum shared a moving reflection on how society reacts to women who leave toxic relationships. Without naming anyone directly, the singer wrote about “three kinds of people”—those who encourage women to walk away from harmful situations, those who mourn them after suicide, and those who shame women for leaving.

The most heart-wrenching part of her post, however, was her caption, which translated from Malayalam reads: “A woman who is still alive only because of her daughter… only because my parents, my child, some friends, and a few relatives held me close, I survived without taking my own life.”

The post has resonated widely across Kerala, especially at a time when the state is witnessing an alarming rise in reports of suicides among married women.

Beegum’s message appears to be both personal and political—a quiet outcry on behalf of many women struggling in silence behind closed doors.
While Raaza has not responded to Beegam’s post, his recent media appearances, including his Timeline interview, have stayed focused on his musical evolution and the launch of Kolaayi, a new platform for emerging artists.
The absence of any reference to his former partner has not gone unnoticed by fans of the once-adored duo Raaza & Beegum, whose collaborations once lit up both concert halls and YouTube.
Now separated, the couple has taken distinctly different public paths—with Raaza leaning into a rebranding arc, and Beegum using social media as a space for her independent music.
